Beta Sitosterol vs. Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health

Beta Sitosterol vs. Saw Palmetto for Prostate Health

Nutritional support for prostate health is gaining wide popularity these days. Already established by the medical profession in Europe for the last twenty years, nutrients like saw palmetto and beta sitosterol are now becoming an accepted option in the United States as well, for prostate health maintenance. These two nutrients, derived from botanical sources, are prescribed by many doctors to their patients for nutritionally promoting healthy prostate functions and relieving discomforts associated with an aging prostate.

The question people are now asking is: Which is the better nutrient for promoting prostate health? Saw palmetto or beta sitosterol?

Beta Sitosterol

Beta sitosterol is a plant sterol ester found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. It is found in saw palmetto berries, too. The chemical structure of beta sitosterol is similar to cholesterol. Today, “beta sitosterol” has become a household word since it is being used as a functional ingredient in many familiar food items we eat for its cholesterol-regulating properties. However, the role of beta sitosterol doesn’t end there. Beta sitosterol has also been extensively studied for its vital role in supporting and maintaining a healthy prostate.

Saw Palmetto

Saw palmetto, or Serenoa repens, is a palm tree that grows in the West Indies and along the southeastern coast of the United States.

The Mayo Clinic gives saw palmetto an A rating for its role in supporting the healthy aging of the prostate gland. The rating “A” denotes that there is sufficient evidence from scientific research for its efficacy. Berries of the saw palmetto plant are abounding in health-benefiting sterols and are used to produce prostate supplements. Saw palmetto contains a mix of various sterols, the star being beta sitosterol, known for its stellar role in supporting prostate health. While the benefit of saw palmetto has been recorded, there is debate on whether saw palmetto supplements available in the market contain enough beta sitosterol to be of any therapeutic use.

]]>

Just How Much Beta Sitosterol Is in Saw Palmetto?

The saw palmetto berries contain a mix of fatty acids, flavonoids, polysaccharides and sitosterols. In general a typical saw palmetto product would contain 85 to 95 percent of mixed sterols and fatty acids. The mixed sterols are cholesterol, brassicasterol, campesterol, stigmasterol, beta sitosterol and comprise just about 1 percent of the nutritional profile of saw palmetto berries.

Beta Sitosterol is More Effective for Promoting Prostate Health

While beta sitosterol has been pinpointed as the sterol that provides prostate health benefits, most saw palmetto supplements in the market contain about 85 percent of fatty acids and just a minute quantity of beta sitosterol. They may not contain an adequate supply of active ingredients to be of much benefit. The better option for promoting prostate health would obviously be a pure extract of beta sitosterol.

What Does the Research Show?

Much research has been conducted on saw palmetto. Comparatively, research on beta sitosterol began about 50 years ago. Studies conducted on saw palmetto show conflicting inferences. Some research shows it to be effective, while other studies do not show any positive results. In contrast, studies using beta sitosterol are more conclusive and show consistently significant positive inferences.

Who Should Take Beta Sitosterol supplements?
Men over 40 should start taking beta sitosterol supplements.
Men who have a history of prostate ailments in the family, men who are overweight or are African American may want to begin taking nutritional support at an earlier age since there are higher incidences reported in such groups.
Those suffering from the discomforts of an aging prostate may also find relief in taking beta sitosterol supplements.

A pure extract of beta sitosterol contains the desired amount of active beta sitosterol. A daily dose of 300 mg is recommended by experts. However, other minerals and nutrients are also known to play a role in supporting prostate health. These include zinc, molybdenum, copper, selenium, Vitamin D and many more, required in minute quantities for protecting prostate health. Super Beta Prostate provides all these nutrients in the right proportion for promoting and maintenance prostate health.

The combination of ingredients in Super Beta Prostate provides a broad spectrum of nutrition for strategically targeting the health of an aging prostate.

In fact, Native Americans with urinary problems used the herb and it helped them in some way. Men with prostate problems can also benefit a lot from using the herb.

If ever you’re interested in using saw palmetto especially the capsule supplement, you should first consult a doctor or specialist. This is important so that you can avoid certain allergies and other possible side effects.

Suppose you’ve already tried so many different hair loss products and you can’t find the right one for you. Try saw palmetto now and see its effects on you. You can purchase good quality supplements, shampoos and even creams. Saw palmetto products are reasonably priced so you can be sure that you’re about to spend a small amount only.

Saw palmetto and hair loss are indeed intertwined. There are so many herbs available but saw palmetto is one of the most effective. Why not conduct a search online now and discover more about the herb. If you’re not convinced yet, check out the customer testimonials and product reviews on saw palmetto. Saw Palmetto for Hair Loss, Saw Palmetto Benefits

Saw Palmetto for Hair Loss, Saw Palmetto Benefits

Saw palmetto benefits are numerous and diverse, which is why saw palmetto is considered one of the most versatile herbal medicines available. Here we explore just some of them, so you can decide if you should consider taking saw palmetto supplements.

It is a naturally occurring plant that grows in North America. The plant has been harvested for use in men who are experiencing prostate or urinary tract inflammations in men, but has also been noted to reduce the production of DHT in men who are experiencing hair loss.

By far the most common type of baldness (alopecia) in males is called male-pattern baldness or androgenic (androgenetic) alopecia. When this condition develops, the hair is lost in a well-defined “M” pattern (hence the name.) Women also suffer from androgenic alopecia; in females this condition is known as female-pattern baldness.

Saw palmetto baldness treatment is said to work by interrupting hormonal signals and therefore reducing the uptake by the hair follicles of a damaging chemical called dyhydrotestosterone (DHT). There are both topical and oral preparations and these can complement each other by reducing DHT locally on the scalp and throughout the body so promoting healthy hair growth.

Saw palmetto is a natural herb which effectively combats hair loss. The medical term for the herb Saw palmetto is Serenoa repens. A small palm which grows in warm climates such as the Southeastern part of United States produces a red fruit. This herb is very popular in Germany. Saw Palmetto lowers the DHT level in our body by obstructing 5 alpha-reductose, thus reducing the development of DHT, which causes hair loss.

Chances are you have heard of saw palmetto. Hair loss is probably the last thing that you expected saw palmetto to be associated with, but as of late there have been many treatments out there that have been designed to alleviate the symptoms of losing hair and help re grow hair and this is just one of them.

When using saw palmetto for hair loss one option is using it as an external treatment by massaging it into the scalp and hair. You can purchase saw palmetto as an oil extract or as an ointment. One of the reasons saw palmetto has been so successful in the treatment of hair loss, particularly when used externally, is that its components are lipophilic in nature. This means they are well extracted into the oil base typically used, and are easily absorbed by the skin, therefore providing a more productive treatment.

It thus helps revive hair follicles, improve hair strength, body and shine, make scalp less sensitive to stress and irritation. So if you are looking for safe products for hair loss Saw Palmetto is one option you should consider first. Although it is not known to help sudden hair shedding but if taken over a period of time it certainly would help prevent alopecia and atleast prolong a condition where a lot of people may go for surgical option such as transplant for restoration of their crown. Taking it alongside some essential vitamins and minerals would help further.

Saw Palmetto: What It Is And What It Does

Saw Palmetto: What It Is And What It Does

You might have heard ads all over the radio advertising saw palmetto, and have grown curious as to what this product is and for what is it used.  There are simple explanations to both of these questions.

What is Saw Palmetto?

Saw palmetto is known by the botanical name of Serenoa repens.  This plant, which is a type of fan palm, is native to the southeastern United States, and thrives especially well in Florida.  It looks like a palm tree only much shorter, taking on more the appearance of a shrub.  After the plant flowers, berries are produced, and this is what you will typically find available for sale locally as well as from online dried herb merchants.

The saw palmetto berry may be offered in different forms.  These often include powder, which can be placed inside capsules, or the berries can be cut and then sifted into a uniform size.  Saw palmetto extract is also commonly available.  Saw palmetto extract is usually thought of as a liquid extract that is made through a distilling process.  Organic versions as well as wild crafted may also be found.  Products such as organic saw palmetto extract and saw palmetto berry that have achieved organic certification have met rigorous standards set forth by the United States Department of Agriculture and National Organic Program.  Wild crafted herbs are those that are gathered from wild-growing plants.  Saw palmetto berry may also be available in a standardized form.  This means that there is a guaranteed amount of saw palmetto berry in each serving.

What Does Saw Palmetto Berry Do?

Saw palmetto extract and berries are thought to reduce enlarged prostate glands.  The condition, known as benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH, causes the prostate to increase in size as men age, and thus these products are marketed to middle-aged and older men.  It may also help as an antiseptic and to increase urine flow.  It has been used in herbal medicine traditions as a uterine tonic.  It may help to induce coughing, and may even have sedative qualities.  It may increase the sex drive and may be used as a tonic to slowly and generally improve health.

Saw palmetto berry, saw palmetto extract and all herbal products need to be used with care.  Because they have not received FDA evaluation, they should not be used for the treatment or prevention of disease.  If you believe yourself to have a medical problem, you should seek advice from your health care provider promptly.

In this article Anne Harvester writes about saw palmetto extract.

The condition of benign prostatic hyperplasia is normally seen in middle aged and elderly men. Prostate is the male exocrine gland which is responsible for the alkalinity of the semen. In benign prostatic hyperplasia, the prostate gland enlarges. BPH primarily causes obstruction of the urethra. Saw Palmetto – Hair Loss May Be Alleviated With Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto – Hair Loss May Be Alleviated With Saw Palmetto

Chances are you have heard of saw palmetto. Hair loss is probably the last thing that you expected saw palmetto to be associated with, but as of late there have been many treatments out there that have been designed to alleviate the symptoms of losing hair and help re grow hair and this is just one of them.

It has been known to grow wild in some areas of the southern United States. It is known scientifically as Serenoa Repens, and was not always used by those losing hair. It has been known to have other health benefits, but was never thought to help with hair re growth.

It is still in its experimental stages in some forms, but more and more studies have been showing a positive link between hair regrowth and the plant that begs investigation and is giving hope to many people who are suffering from the loss of their hair.

]]>

The science behind this treatment is that it blocks the production of a type of hormone called DHT that has been known to contribute to hair falling out. If you have heard of the plant before, it is probably in relationship to some of the other things it has been known to help treat, such as prostate cancer and to contribute to the health of the prostate in general. It is only recently that it has been used in this respect, but it has proven a very worthy ingredient in many excellent treatments these days.

How did it come about as a treatment? For some time it has been used to treat prostate cancer and to promote the health of the prostate in many men. After some time, men began to notice that when they took the treatment they noticed that they were experiencing less baldness and even starting to grow hair in places where they thought they were going bald.

Science had to take advantage of this, and now things are in the works with it that are aimed at treating male pattern baldness. Nothing is for sure yet, but some treatments involving it have proven to be rather helpful and it is one of the least expensive types of treatments on the market today.

If you are looking for a new way to treat hair falling out, this just may be the thing for you. There are many different ways to go about treating hair loss and it is true that it is only in its experimental stages, but it is important to give different things a try to see what can work for you. These treatments are on the up and up; finding whether or not this can work for you is all that is left.

Saw Palmetto Can Naturally Treat Many Ailments

Saw Palmetto Can Naturally Treat Many Ailments

Saw palmetto is a palm-like small plant found in North America. The extract is taken from the small berries and it consists of sterols and fatty acids. The natives have used the herb to treat various kinds of problems related to the urinary tract, genital and reproductive system. The extract is widely marketed as an aphrodisiac for both men and women. It is also used for muscle building. Various fatty acids found in the herb are oleic acid, lauric acid, myristic acid, palmitic acid, polysaccharides and phytosterols.

One of the main uses of the extract is for treating prostatic hyperplasia. It is a condition characterized by the enlargement of the prostate gland. This can cause a block in the urethra and may require a surgical procedure for curing. The herb has the capacity to block the actions of the testosterone that causes the enlargement and interferes with the flow of the urine. The extract is known to improve the urine flow and also reduces the urgency and frequency of urination.

]]>

Saw palmetto is very useful for treating chronic bronchitis and bladder inflammation. The fatty acids have components that inhibit the effects of testosterone. The herb can also prevent the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone that is responsible for the multiplication of the prostate cells leading to baldness in males. It plays a key role in treating hair loss as well.

This herb is also famous for its ability to increase breast size. It also improves sex drive. Several other conditions are also treated by using this herb. It is used for treating chronic pelvic pain, coughs, colds, sore throat, irritated mucous membranes, chronic bronchitis, cancer, migraines and for stimulating air flow. The berries are used for making certain soft drinks. For a synergistic effect it can be taken with vitamin B6, azelaic acid and zinc.

There are no significant side effects of the berries and the extract. There are no proper research documents that suggest any kind of long term side effects. Before using it, it is always better to consult your doctor and follow his advice. Men over 50 who suffer from benign prostatic hyperplasia can benefit by using this medicinal herb.

Saw palmetto is being widely researched in Europe. It is gaining popularity in North America as well. It is mostly used due to its advantages for the urinary tract. As supplements, it is available in the form of capsules. Pregnant women should refrain from using this because it can be harmful to unborn babies. Some experts have expressed concern over it passing into the breast milk that could harm a nursing baby.

Saw Palmetto Berries Tea

Saw Palmetto Berries Tea

Prostate enlargement issues are common among men as they age. Lots of men suffer from the symptoms that come along with having a swollen or overly filled prostate. Some of the symptoms may include trouble urinating, frequent urinating, the constant feeling of needing to urinate, burning or pain upon urinating, frequent night time urinating causing loss of sleep, anxiety, and erectile dysfunction.

The enlarged prostate can cause pressure on the urethra and the bladder which can create the feeling of a full bladder, block the urine passage and block the blood flow for a man to be able to achieve an erection. Frequently waking up at night can also have negative effects mentally because of the lack of sleep. Changes may happen in the brain causing anxiety and sometimes even depression. Prostate cancer can become an issue if not treated properly.

This tea is a natural alternative to harmful and dangerous prescription medications. Also, it is an alternative for men who do not feel comfortable enough to take pills and or other oral supplements.

Many men have problems with their prostate as they age. Once a man hits 40 years old professionals in the medical field may advise men to take care of their prostates by taking supplements and regularly getting checked up on by a doctor. Prostate issues usually start happening when men are older. Fifty years old and older are normally when signs start showing up. The reason men start seeing a doctor when they are 40 is because they are trying to help prevent, or catch problems before or as they start to happen.

The directions say to put a tea bag in 6 ounces of boiling water. The tea bag should steep in the water for three minutes. The tea bag should be squeezed out in to the cup upon removal.  The tea should be taken at least once a day.

The only ingredient in this tea is Saw Palmetto Berries. While this may seem a little minimalistic, it is a powerful and potent ingredient. It is enough to help when used along with other doctor recommended remedies.

Allergies may need to be taken into consideration as consumers may want to try it out before drinking it in full. It must be prepared and enjoyed at least once every day. It may take a while to start working so patience is an important thing to remember. As soon as it starts working and symptoms start to fade the tea drinking may be reduced.
