Yoga for Asthma and Bronchitis
Yoga for Asthma and Bronchitis
Bronchitis, unlike what some believe, is something that doesn’t just goes away eventually. Being a respiratory illness, it is something that can be chronic, which lasts for a long time, or acute, which can be cured after a short period of time, making it a potential cause for impairment of various bodily functions in the future.
Asthma is a disease characterized by difficulty in breathing due to narrowing of the air passage, accumulation of mucus or fluid in the lungs and inflammation of the mucus membrane of the respiratory tract. This causes the release of histamine that increases the inflammation and swelling. The attacks generally occur late in the night.Allergic reactions to dust, pet hairs, insects, some types of food etc. can set it off. Stress, changes in temperature, anxiety and bronchitis are other common reasons. Exercise is essential. Swimming is very good to increase the oxygen supply to the lungs. It also strengthens the rib cage area. Yoga is also good to relax and control stress. Smoking and second hand smoke are to be avoided. Avoid heavy meals at night. Keep your home dust free and drink adequate water to keep the mucus loose.
Benefits
Yoga has many health benefits, the main are:
* Yoga asanas massages all organs of the body. It works on the internal organs in a systematic manner. This stimulation of the organs benefits us by keeping away disease.
* Yoga increases the lubrication of joints, ligament and tendons. Yoga positions exercise the different tendons and ligaments of the body.
* Yoga offers a complete detoxification of the body. It ensures the maximum blood supply to various parts of the body, which helps in the flushing out of toxins from all over the body.
* Yoga exercises strengthen the nervous system through its non-tiring physiological asanas.
* Yoga breathing exercises and meditations develop parts of the brain that are normally dormant.
Many doctors now agree that overconsumption of nutrients (overeating) does not guarantee more nutrients to the tissues, but not many seem to consider respiration rate in the respiration equation, that overbreathing may play a key role in respiratory “disease.” In fact, some doctors no longer check respiration rate during an exam. It is commonly known that increased obesity results in metabolism dysfunction, large meals cause blood sugar spikes and metabolism accelerators (dieting drugs and supplements) due not increase stasis in tissues, making loss of fat more difficult in the long term. Similarly, overbreathing causes a spiraling of processes which decrease alvioli efficiency, disrupting breathing rate “calibration” and oxygenation of other tissues, decreasing health and oxygenation. Despite more oxygen entering the lungs, because of the low CO2 level, less oxygen actually makes it to the cells that need it. This overbreathing could be triggered by stress, anxiety, nasal congestion, allergies and other triggers and factors which cause people to breathe more frequently and deeply than their body would otherwise. One problem of low CO2 levels is a scientific hypothesis proposed by Artour Rakhimov, PhD, that chronic hyperventilation promotes disease and cancer. Previous research has suggested that chronic hyperventilation washes out CO2 from each cell of the human organism. Since CO2 is a dilator of small blood vessels, low CO2 concentrations lead to the constrictions of arterioles causing problems with blood and oxygen delivery.

Asthma is an abnormal lung condition characterized by difficulty in breathing. People with asthma have an extra sensitive or hyper responsive airways. The airways react by narrowing or obstructing when they become irritated. This makes it difficult for the air to move in and out. This narrowing or obstruction can cause one or a combination of the following symptoms like wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath and chest tightness.
Overall, there are many treatments for asthma, and herbal methods are becoming more and more popular. If nothing else is helping your asthma, you will want to look into some of the herbs listed above. You may be surprised to find out that these can do a lot for you and your breathing problems.
While certain herbs, home remedies or natural medication may help in relieving the condition, it is imperative to listen to your health practitioner. If you are on medication, natural medication can assist, but should not be taken as a complete substitute. Believe it or not, research has shown that coffee, tea, caffeinated drinks, cocoa and choco.
One of the oldest herbs in use today, ginkgo has a broad range of indications. For asthma sufferers, ginkgo works to inhibit PAF (platelet activating factor), a powerful inducer of platelet aggregator and anaphylactic reactions. Natural Herbs that stimulate anti-PAF activity are known to assist in the treatment of asthma, allergic reactions, thrombosis and shock. One study showed that a 600mg standardized dose of ginkgo reduced airway hypersensitivity in patients with asthma.
Use Immunity plus Immune System Booster regularly to attain optimal immune functioning. Keep an ‘asthma diary’ to help you to identify triggers. Avoid tobacco smoke and keep your home free from dust, pollen, air fresheners.
Coltsfoot acts as an antispasmodic and sedative. It is an herb for asthma that soothes and calms the patient. Coltsfoot can be consumed directly by chewing or through the preparation of a medicinal tea made from the dried coltsfoot to ease cough and relieve chest pain in chest colds. This tea is also beneficial in the cure of whooping cough and viral pneumonia.
Herbs like elecampane, garlic, mustard, ginger, skullcap and valerian easily available naturally and these herbs are highly recommended for the treatment of asthma. There are herbal chocolate and tea, which can be used for the treatment to control asthma. There are tonic, based on herbs to strengthen the immune system and respiratory system. Food powders are made of herbs and fruits to fight asthmatic attacks. Corticosteroids block the inflammatory response and reduce the asthma symptoms. Systemic corticosteroids (such as prednisone) may be used to treat acute asthma attack and inhalation of corticosteroids (such as Azmacort) may reduce the likelihood of asthma attack through desensitization to allergens. Though effective, long-term use of corticosteroids has a wide range of side-effects including but not limited to poor wound healing, decreased immunity, retarded growth in children, GI bleeding, hunger and weight gain.
Garlic cloves contain chemicals that can improve your blood circulation and decrease inflammation. Garlic can be taken in capsule or liquid form. The strong odor of garlic helps you to take deeper breaths. It is one of the most effective herbs for asthma. Try proven herbal remedies: Supplements containing boswellia extract (900 mg a day), ivy leaf extract (50 drops a day), or tylophora leaf (200 to 400 mg a day) may improve breathing symptoms; children should be given one-half of these amounts or less, depending on body weight.

mullein

They are biennial or perennial plants, rarely annuals or subshrubs, growing to 0.5–3 m tall. The plants first form a dense rosette of leaves at ground level, subsequently sending up a tall flowering stem. Biennial plants will form the rosette the first year, and during the following season is when the stem emerges. The leaves are spirally arranged, often densely hairy, though glabrous (hairless) in some species. The flowers have five symmetrical petals; petal colours in different species include yellow (most common), orange, red-brown, purple, blue or white. The fruit is a capsule containing numerous minute seeds.
The plant has a long history of use as a medicine, and is an effective treatment for asthma and respiratory disorders.[3] Extracts made from the plant’s flowers are a very effective treatment for ear infections. Although this plant is a recent arrival to North America, Native Americans used the ground seeds of this plant as a paralytic fish poison due to their high levels of rotenone. One species, Verbascum thapsus (Great mullein), is used as a herbal remedy for sore throat, cough, and lung diseases.
Asthma symptoms frequently cause sleeplessness, daytime fatigue, reduced activity levels. Modern medicine has little help for patients with asthma, most drugs produces a temporary effect. The buildup of toxins in the sufferers’ body is caused by poor digestion; chemical imbalances can be treated with natural herbal remedies.

Natural Asthma Relief – What You Should Know
Have you been seeking any natural asthma solutions to help alleviate your asthma symptoms? A lot of folks have turned to natural asthma relief to help them with their asthmatic illness. Some of these include supplements, massage therapy, nutrition, herbs and botanicals.
Unfortunately there have not been a lot of long-term scientific studies on alternative herbal asthma remedies. Some of these herbs and supplements include grapeseed, boswellia, butterbur, fish oil, vitamins C and dried ivy.
Since one common trigger of asthma is stress, yoga is sometimes used to control breathing and relieve intense stress and has been found to be quite helpful for many asthma sufferers. It has been reported that reducing dairy items and sugar has been helpful for some children who have asthma.
Although studies are inconclusive, some people believe that acupuncture, which uses needles on certain parts of the body, can significantly decrease the occurrence of asthma attacks and can greatly improve breathing. Another technique that people use is to try and control the amount of air through the lungs by increasing it during an asthma attack to reduce the amount of fear and anxiety.
There are many natural remedies and solutions for asthma sufferers out there. However, you should always carefully select the brands. Make sure that you purchase items that list the herbs manufacturer, expiration date, dosage information and any potential side effects that may occur. Be very wary of outlandish claims that some herbal products tout. Do your research online or at the library for each particular herb or supplement that you may be considering using. Be sure to check whether or not it clashes with your current medication and is safe to use.
Many people with asthma problems have found that natural alternatives are the ideal solution to help alleviate their asthma symptoms. If you have an asthma doctor that you see on a regular basis it is a good idea to discuss this just to make sure.

Asthma – Treatments
By: micheal wiliam

Asthma is a disease of the lungs that affects your breathing. It is a disease in which a person’s airways become inflamed, swollen, and narrowed, making it difficult for air to flow into and out of the lungs. The condition marked by chronic inflammation and irritation of the airways. The first consultation with an Ayurveda doctor, including the diagnosis will last for more than an hour. The basic step in the diagnosis will be to find the person’s body humour (Dosha) – Vata, Pita or Kapha, because it is the imbalance of these body humours that creates the disease. But these reasons do not stop people from using herbs mainly because herbs are cheaper, more accessible, and natural. Some people do not want to experience the side effects of anti-asthma medications. It is also very easy to get herbal treatment for asthma. You can buy the herbs from the grocery or market. What are the herbs used in asthma treatment?
A good treatment for asthma attack will not cure the condition forever, but it will enable you to manage and subdue any further attacks effectively. Asthma treatments usually come in oral or vapor form. Some are long term treatments, such as leukotriene inhibitors, while others are designed to be used only during an attack.Bronchial asthma treatment now has new treatment protocols that recommend the prevention of asthma medications, such as inhaling corticosteroids or nebulizers. This medication usually helps an asthmatic person to suppress the inflammation of the lungs as well as reduce the swelling of the linings in the airway passages. There are many different treatment options available for asthma patients. Treatment for asthma is always on a case-to-case basis. As with any kind of prescription, you cannot use another person’s prescription and think that it will work for you the way it did for him just because you have the same symptoms. You need to see a doctor personally and based on his diagnosis, you will be suggested a number of treatment options.
Studies show that using a natural treatment for asthma such as breathing exercises and yoga reduced the need to take asthma medications. Breathing exercises involves teaching the asthma patient the proper way to breathe, using the diaphragm instead of the chest muscles. Yoga also helps with asthma by reducing stress and teaching relaxation techniques.Licorice Root has been proven as one of the natural treatments for asthma. Using Licorice Root enables asthmatics to breathe fairly easier, making their asthma less of a problem. What it does is fight inflammation, which is the main cause of the airways being constricted.Asthma is a disease that no one would want to deal with, and at times can be a very hard and frustrating task. So now that you have found what you are looking for, let’s get to it the good stuff.

Herbal Supplement for Asthma
By: Ricky Lim
Posted: Sep 04, 2007
]]>
Today more and more asthma sufferers are turning to use more natural ways of treating asthma rather than relying on the medications that their doctor prescribes. In the USA most herbal supplement for asthma treatment that are now available today have been both evaluated and then endorsed by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Plus you will find plenty of reports available from those who have used them and have found them to be effective in treating their asthma.
In this article I will take a closer look at some of the types of herbal supplements for asthma sufferers. However before you do start to use them it is best that you discuss matters with your doctor or health provider first and do not stop taking any medication that they have prescribed without them allowing you to.
Ma Huang (Ephedra)
This particular herb should only be used when a sufferer is closely supervised by their doctor. Although it acts as a bronchodilator so it helps to open up the airways that have become constricted it can also cause a person’s heart rate to increase and some people may find that they become irritable when they use it.

Coleus Forshkholii
This herb again acts in the same way as Ma Huang but should not be used by asthma sufferers who suffer from high blood pressure and are having to take medication to treat this condition as well. Plus it should be avoided by those sufferers who are taking anti-coagulant medication for some other disorder.
Lobelia
Although powerful in treating asthma, this herb can be quite toxic and should only be used in very small doses and only when a person is being treated either by their doctor or a herbalist who is experienced and knows everything relating to herbs and their uses. Again this type of herbal supplement for asthma should not be used by sufferers who have high blood pressure or have some type of heart disease.
Reishi Mushroom
This particular herb contains properties which are anti inflammatory as well as help to boost the immune system. Also in Chinese Medicine it has been reported that this particular herbal supplement for asthma treatment is good for strengthen the lungs. You can either take reishi mushroom by preparing them within recipes of meals you are cooking or take it in its concentrated form as a tincture.
However as previously mentioned when using any kind of herbal supplement for asthma it is advisable that you discuss matters with your doctor first.

Never ever discontinue your prescribed medicines you doctor has given you without having a serious talk with your doctor. There are herbal remedies for bad breath that can be purchased at your drug store and might actually work but not as good as a tooth brush and dental floss. No one has ever died as a result of bad breath though. No matter what you hear about any herbal treatments always consult your doctor and let him or her explain what exactly it is in the medicine you are thinking of consuming.
There are other complimentary or alternative medicine therapies that are out there. As long as you consult your doctor some are no risk at all. Acupuncture is one. The only risk here is having to walk around with sore spots on your body, as long as you continue your prescribed medicine. If you are going to experiment with food avoidance it is also important to let your doctor know what you are doing so if you begin to suffer from malnutrition he knows what the cause is. If you suffer from food allergies it is wise to have a medical professional supervise and document your food elimination program.
