Pre Menstrual Syndrome 37 – Pre-menstrual Syndrome and Herbs

Premenstrual syndrome effects over 70% to 90% of women before menopause in the US and less for women in Southeast Asia because of their difference in living style and social structure. Premenstrual syndrome is defined as faulty function of the ovaries related to the women’s menstrual cycle, it effects a women’s physical and emotional state, and sometimes interferes with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts. In this article, we will discuss how herbs effect women with PMS.

1. Chaste berry tree
Chaste berry tree is a very important herb which has been used by herbalist in normalizing and regulating women menstrual cycle. It contains variety of substances that help to act on hypothalamus and pituitary gland by increasing the release of luteinizing hormone and inhibiting the follicle-stimulating hormone, thereby it helps to balance the levels of estrogen and progesterone during menstrual cycle resulting in lessening the symptoms of PMS.


2. Black cohosh
Black cohosh is phytoestrogenic. it helps to inhibit the levels of bad estrogen and increase the levels of good estrogen in our body either caused abnormal function of liver or environment toxins accumulated in the body. It also have anti spasmodic effects resulting in decrease the risk of nervous tension for some women with PMS.

3. Skullcap
Skullcap is liver tonic plant, it helps to improve liver synthetic carbohydrate and in fat and protein metabolism resulting in reducing the risk of nervous tension and menstrual cramps.

4. Dandelion
Dandelion has been used in traditional Chinese medicine in treating liver disease. By detoxifying the clogged liver, it helps to vitalize the liver in estrogen regulation resulting in lessening the risk of estrogen and progesterone imbalance for women with PMS.

5.Milk thistle
Milk thistle besides helps to re strengthen the liver function by stimulating the regrowing of new liver cells, it’s linoleic acid also aids liver in fat and protein metabolism resulting in increasing the levels of good prostaglandins hormone which reduce the symptoms of PMS such as breast tenderness and pain, menstrual cramps.

6. St. John Wort
St. John wort has been used for thousand of years in traditional medicine in treating depression because it helps to inhibit the fluctuation of serotonin hormone. It also contains substance which helps to reduce nervous tension and has a diuretic effects in treating water retention.
